A winter road trip you'll never forget

Northern Norway is one of the few places on Earth where you can chase the Northern Lights, watch whales, and explore the Arctic Circle — all from your own camper.

Picture this: you wake up in your own warm camper, parked next to a Norwegian fjord. The sky is still dark — it's the polar night. You open the door and look up. The Aurora Borealis is dancing green and purple across the sky. You make coffee on your kitchenette, climb back into bed, and watch the show from your sleeping bag.

That's what an Arctic winter camper trip looks like. With our winter-equipped fleet, you can do this in real comfort — fuel-driven heaters keep the cabin at room temperature even at −20 °C, spiked tires grip icy roads, and the whole experience is more affordable than hotel-hopping the same route.

Built for Arctic conditions

Every winter rental comes with the equipment you need to safely explore Northern Norway off-season.

01

Spiked winter tires

Studded tires for grip on icy and snow-packed Norwegian roads — required by law in winter.

02

Calentador de combustible

Diesel heater keeps the cabin warm overnight without idling the engine — works down to deep sub-zero.

03

Insulated cabin

Thermal-insulated walls and roof so the heater's warmth stays inside, not leaking into the snow.

04

4WD options

Pick the Grand Camper 4WD or Atlas Camper 4WD for confidence on steep, snowy, or back-country roads.

What you can experience

Northern Norway in winter is a different planet. Here's what to put on your trip plan.

Northern Lights
AURORA SEASON

The Northern Lights

Northern Norway is one of the best places on the planet to see the Aurora Borealis — and with a camper, you can chase clear skies and stay out late without worrying about getting back to a hotel. Best season: September through March.

Senja, Norway
ARCTIC COASTLINE

Whale watching in Skjervøy

From November to mid-January, orcas and humpback whales gather in the fjords near Skjervøy to feed on herring. Park your camper near the coast and join a small-boat whale-watching tour from local operators.

Lofoten Islands
ISLAND HOPPING

The Lofoten Islands

Dramatic peaks rising out of the Norwegian Sea, tiny fishing villages painted red and ochre, and some of the best surf in the Arctic. Lofoten is a 4–6 hour drive south from Tromsø — perfect for a multi-day camper detour.

Norwegian Polar Night
POLAR NIGHT

The polar night

From late November to mid-January, the sun never rises above the horizon in Tromsø. You get long blue hours instead — a soft, dreamlike light that photographers travel for. With a camper, you can chase it across the Arctic landscape.

Best vans for Arctic trips

For winter trips we recommend our 4WD models or the Viking Home motorhome with full bathroom.

Winter trip tips from the locals

A few things to know before you set off into the Arctic.

01

Pack layers

Layered wool and synthetic clothing beats a single thick coat. Pack thermal base layers, a warm mid layer, and a windproof shell.

02

Keep the tank full

In remote Arctic areas, fuel stations can be 100+ km apart and not all are open 24/7. Top up whenever you can.

03

Aurora app

Install an aurora forecast app (e.g. My Aurora Forecast). Combine it with cloud-cover forecasts to find clear skies.

04

Stock up before driving north

Supermarkets are sparse north of Narvik. Buy hot drinks, hearty food, and snacks before leaving the bigger towns.
