Northern Norway in winter is a different planet. Here's what to put on your trip plan.
Northern Norway is one of the best places on the planet to see the Aurora Borealis — and with a camper, you can chase clear skies and stay out late without worrying about getting back to a hotel. Best season: September through March.
From November to mid-January, orcas and humpback whales gather in the fjords near Skjervøy to feed on herring. Park your camper near the coast and join a small-boat whale-watching tour from local operators.
Dramatic peaks rising out of the Norwegian Sea, tiny fishing villages painted red and ochre, and some of the best surf in the Arctic. Lofoten is a 4–6 hour drive south from Tromsø — perfect for a multi-day camper detour.
From late November to mid-January, the sun never rises above the horizon in Tromsø. You get long blue hours instead — a soft, dreamlike light that photographers travel for. With a camper, you can chase it across the Arctic landscape.

A few things to know before you set off into the Arctic.
Layered wool and synthetic clothing beats a single thick coat. Pack thermal base layers, a warm mid layer, and a windproof shell.
In remote Arctic areas, fuel stations can be 100+ km apart and not all are open 24/7. Top up whenever you can.
Install an aurora forecast app (e.g. My Aurora Forecast). Combine it with cloud-cover forecasts to find clear skies.
Supermarkets are sparse north of Narvik. Buy hot drinks, hearty food, and snacks before leaving the bigger towns.
