All distances are real. All recommendations are routes we've helped customers drive.

A Norway camper road trip typically runs 4 to 14 days. The shortest workable trip is a 4–5 day Arctic Aurora loop from Tromsø; the longest single-camper trip our customers run is a 14-day one-way from Oslo to Tromsø via Lofoten. Routes from Oslo focus on the southern fjords; routes from Tromsø focus on the Arctic. Below are the six itineraries we get asked about the most, with day-by-day plans.

Three of these routes start in Oslo, two in Tromsø, and one is the famous Oslo to Tromsø one-way — drive the country end-to-end with the camper dropped off at the other depot.

10 days ~1,300 km May – September Round trip from Oslo

Route 01 — Southern Fjords Loop: Oslo → Bergen → Trolltunga

The classic. Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, the iconic Trolltunga cliff, plus a stop in Bergen for hanseatic wharfs and seafood.

  1. Day 1 — Oslo to Lillehammer. Pick up the camper in Maura (15 min from OSL), drive 2h north along Lake Mjøsa. Park overnight in Hunderfossen.
  2. Day 2 — Lillehammer to Geiranger. 5 horas por el valle de Gudbrandsdalen y por la espectacular carretera Geirangerfjord.

14 days ~2,400 km June – August One-way Oslo → Tromsø

Route 02 — The End-to-End: Oslo → Lofoten → Tromsø

The famous one. Drive Norway's full length, over the Arctic Circle, through the Lofoten Islands, ending in Tromsø. Drop off the camper at our Tromsø depot.

  1. Day 1–2 — Oslo to Trondheim. 8h al norte. Parada en Røros (ciudad minera de la UNESCO).

  6. Day 10 — Lofoten to Senja. Ferry from Gryllefjord. Senja is "Norway in miniature" — quieter than Lofoten.
  7. Day 11 — Senja. Excursión a la montaña Segla, mirador de Bergsbotn.
  8. Day 12 — Senja to Tromsø. Last 3h drive to our Tromsø depot in Kvaløysletta.
  9. Day 13–14 — Tromsø. Cable car, Arctic Cathedral, midnight sun (May 20–Jul 22). Fly home from TOS.
5 days ~600 km September – April Round trip from Tromsø

Route 03 — Arctic Aurora Loop: Tromsø → Senja → Kvaløya

Northern Lights every clear night for ~200 nights of the year. Short distances, lots of stops, winter-equipped camper.

  1. Day 1 — Tromsø. Pick up at Kvaløysletta depot, drive into town. Polaria museum, Storsteinen cable car. Aurora-chasing if skies clear.
  2. Day 2 — Tromsø to Senja. Conducir 3 horas a través del ferry de Brensholmen. Dormir en Tungeneset.
  3. Day 3 — Senja. Drive the "Norwegian Scenic Route Senja" — Bergsbotn, Tungeneset, Ersfjord beach.

  1. Day 1 — Tromsø to Skibotn. Short 2h drive, the start of the Lyngenfjord scenic route.

Route 05 — West Coast Highlights: Oslo → Geiranger → Atlantic Road

Shorter than the full southern loop, focused on Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen mountain pass, and the photogenic Atlantic Road bridge run.

Route 06 — Lyngenfjord Aurora Short Break

Four-day winter escape for travellers short on time. Lyngen Alps, Skibotn aurora hot-spot, hot springs at Skarsvåg if open.

  1. Day 1 — Tromsø to Lyngseidet. 2.5 h vía ferry de Olderdalen. Los Alpes de Lyngen se alzan directamente desde el fiordo.

Fuel costs

Diesel is around 21–23 NOK / litre. Budget 250–350 NOK / day on long-distance routes. Stations every 50–100 km on main highways.

Ferries

Norway has ~200 car ferries. Many take 15–45 min and accept walk-up vehicles. Long ferries (e.g. Bodø → Moskenes) need booking in summer.

Wild camping

Allemannsretten ("right to roam") allows wild camping on uncultivated land 150 m from buildings, max 2 nights in one spot. Campsites typically 150–300 NOK.

Tolls

Every Norway Campers rental has an AutoPASS toll chip. We invoice tolls at cost after your trip — no surcharge, no admin fee.

Connectivity

Norway has excellent 4G/5G coverage even in remote areas. Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands are fully covered. North Cape stretches it.

Winter driving

Studded winter tyres are standard on all our vans October–April. Roads are well-cleared, but if the forecast turns bad, stay put a day. We never penalise weather delays.

A short Arctic loop from Tromsø works in 4–5 days. The southern fjord circuit from Oslo (Bergen, Trolltunga, Preikestolen) needs 7–10 days. End-to-end Oslo to Tromsø via Lofoten — the classic — is 14 days minimum, 21 days comfortable.
